Unlike your standard homeowners policy which does not cover flood losses, a standard flood insurance policy covers losses which will include structural damage, furnace and air conditioners, flood debris clean up costs as well as flooring surfaces such as carpeting and tile. You can also buy extra coverage for the contents of your home such as your furniture, collectibles, jewelry and clothing.
Three forms of policies are available: Dwelling (most homes), General Property (apartments & businesses) and Residential Condo Building Associations (condos).
While most are not required to have flood insurance, if you have a federally backed mortgage on a home located in a high-risk area, or if you have ever received a federal grant for a previous flood loss, you must have a flood insurance policy to qualify for future aid.
Understand the Facts !!!

* Over half of all recent flood events have occurred in flood zones B, C or X.
* Over 90% of all disasters involve flooding.
* Federal Disaster Assistance is a loan, not a grant.
(The average is $3,500 and must be paid back with interest.)
